LILONGWE -The State House in Malawi has categorically disowned a letter making rounds in the country insinuating that President Joyce Banda had resigned as Head of State.
The State House says it is deeply saddened by the fake letter purportedly written by the President advising the Speaker of Parliament that she had resigned on medical grounds.
The letter alleges that the President, currently attending an African-South American summit in Malabo in Equatorial Guinea, can no longer execute her executive duties due to ill heath as advised by doctors.
“The State House would like to categorically dissociate this letter from Her Excellency the State President Dr. Joyce Banda. At no time has Her Excellency the State President Dr. Joyce Banda has explicitly or implicitly resigned as Malawi’s Head of State,” the State House said in a statement Friday evening signed by its Press Officer, Tusekele Mwanyongo.

The statement says the State House believes the alleged resignation letter is the work of desperate confusionists, who are bent on bringing disorder in the country.
“The architects of the letter are people who cannot appreciate the peace and order currently prevailing in this country under the able leadership of Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda. They are prepared to stoop so low as to break the law just to bring about anarchy for their own selfish ends,” reads the press statement in part.
It further states that the State House is of the strong view that the development is a criminal act, which borders on treason, particularly when the architects of the letter had to forge the signature of the Head of State.
“The Malawi Government will surely not sit back and watch whilst these misguided individuals cross legal boundaries to further their sinister motives,” it says.

Through appropriate law, the State House warns that government, through its enforcing agencies, is taking all measures to investigate the origin of the letter while it is assuring the nation that all persons involved in the “criminal, unpatriotic and malicious act” will be brought to book.
President Banda flew to Equatorial Guinea on Thursday morning for the summit amid simmering situation in the country due to the civil servants strike which was called off a few hours later after government agreed to raise salaries of the striking public workers.

On the other hand, this might also indicate that there are a number of people who are not satisfied with the president's performance. I am not Malawian but I am also doubting the ability of the president. The way she responded on the Malawi -Tanzania border saga was not very good. Why did she react the way she reacted while she was just beginning her term of office as president? Better she resigns and Malawians elect new president.

Si lazima hiyo barua iwe imeandikwa na intelligent system, inaweza kuwa imeandikwa na mhuni tu mtaani, mbona hata hapa bongo kuna watu wanamiliki seals za Ikulu na wizara mbalimbali? Watu wanatengeneza cheti cha form four au form six, ambacho hakuna anayeweza kukitilia shaka, isipokuwa baraza ambao wanaangalia namba na record ya hicho cheti kwenye database yao.
Mimi naamini kunaweza kuwa na wahuni tu wa mitaani wameandika hiyo barua. Na ni kweli kwamba inawezekana kuwa watu hawampendi. Lakini pengine si kwa sababu ya reaction yake kwenye saga la Tanzania -Malawi boarder dispute, bali inaweza kuwa ni kwa sababu hakuingia madarakani kwa kuchaguliwa. Hakuwa chaguo la wamalawi, badala yake aliingia kwenye nafasi aliyonayo kwa kurithi. Jambo ambalo lilipaswa kisheria ashikilie hiyo nafasi kwa muda tu (in transition) wakati wakijiandaa kufanya uchaguzi wa kumuweka Rais wanayemtaka. Hilo linaweza likamgharimu sana, kama hatafikiria juu ya kuitisha uchaguzi mapema.
