The national netball team, Taifa Queens, on Thursday earned Tanzania a silver medal after finishing runners-up at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.

The Queens beat Botswana 43-35 in their last match to end the country's medal drought and give Tanzanians a timely psychological boost after an embarrassing show by track and field athletes and boxers at the games.

The netballers' victory underscored Tanzania's pedigree as an emerging force in the African netball to challenge perennial leaders Malawi, Uganda, Ghana and South Africa. It was also a reward for the hardworking players, Tanzania netball Association (Chaneta) and individuals who support the team. It also gave out netballers an automatic chance to play at the 2015 All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.

However, while we bask in the glory of yet another appearance at the African version of Olympic Games, the team's technical bench, led by Mary Protus, must not rest on their laurels.Botswana's resilient play on Thursday confirmed that another force has emerged in the African netball to challenge the netball powerhouses.

Chaneta must cut short the victory party and immediately look into ways of exposing our girls ahead of the next assignments.Clearly, the Tanzania netball needs a further technical input from more established nations and the hiring of a foreign technical advisor to help Protus' team is an option. Let us savour yet another success by the netballers which is a most appropriate way to inspire our Paralympics team which swings into action in Maputo today.
