Haya si maelezo yangu, ni taarifa iliyotolea na Taasisi ya FREE AFRICA FOUNDATION katika maadhimisho ya miaka 20 ya kuanzishwa kwa taasisi hiyo ambayo kwa sasa makao yake makuu yapo Washington DC, United States. 20th Anniversary of the Free Africa Foundation

The Free Africa Foundation, established in 1993, is now 20 years old. Its agenda is FREEDOM and no nonsense about that. “Africa is poor because she is not free.” Only 13 of 54 African countries are democratic; fewer than 10 have a free media or respect intellectual freedom; and fewer still are economic success stories or economically free. Where is the freedom we fought for from white colonial rule?

For asking that question, they threw me in jail in Senegal in 1994. Their security agents raided my hotel room in Nairobi in 1996. They trailed me everywhere I went in Ghana and Zimbabwe. They even banned my books. Then in 1999, their attack-dogs fire-bombed my office at American University in Washington, DC. But I did not back down and I won’t be deterred.

Despite the attacks and persecution, the Free Africa Foundation (FAF) has managed to rack up the following accomplishments over the years:
• Helped liberate Ghana and bring real freedom and democracy to the country in 2000. If Ghana is doing well today, part of the credit goes to FAF. Former President John Kufuor described FAF as “one of the architects of change” in Ghana.
• Working with various activists to replicate the Ghana example in such countries as Cameroon, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Sudan and Zimbabwe, among others.
• Coined the expression, “African solutions for African problems,” to stress solutions rooted in Africa’s own indigenous heritage and culture – not those copied from abroad and transplanted into Africa. The continent is littered with the putrid carcasses of failed imported solutions.
• Created the concept, “The Cheetah Generation” to take back Africa, one village at a time.
• Produced several award-winning books on Africa,
• Established more than 15 Malaria-Free Zones in Ghana, Benin, Nigeria and Kenya – fumigating villages, distributing insecticide-treated bed nets and anti-malarial drugs to villagers,
• Built clinics in Ghana and Nigeria,
• Built a library for school children,
• Now mobilizing and inspiring the Cheetah Generation

In 1990, only 4 of the 54 African countries were democratic (Gambia, Senegal, Botswana and Mauritius). Today in 2013, only 13 are democratic.– Benin, Botswana, Cape Verde Islands, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Sao Tome & Principe, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia. If you apply a rigorous definition of democracy, several countries on this list would be disqualified because, in addition to periodic elections, you need the following:
a. A freely negotiated Constitution,
b. An independent Judiciary,
c. An independent Electoral Commission,
d. An independent Central Bank,
e. An independent and free Media, and
f. A neutral and professional armed or security forces

Fewer than 5 of the 54 African countries meet these additional democratic requirements.

I rigorously exclude Tanzania from the list. Tanzania is not entirely democratic. The police and the security officers are there for the ruling class.
