In the real estate business, it is sometimes joked that the three most important factors when buying a piece of property are location, location and location. The location of a property is the most fundamental factor that determines its value. Location determines the type neighborhood a property lies within, and the property's access to fundamental necessities such as hospital, school, banks, shops, theaters and libraries. Being located in a good neighborhood generally means one will experience less crime and likely experience greater gains in the value of their real estate over time. In fact, location is so important that an empty lot in an upper-scale neighborhood can be worth far more than a lot with a large home in a less desirable neighborhood.
