Nairobi plans to bid for 2024 olympics

The best Nairobi can do ni kuandaa 'Para Olympic'...

Thanks for clarification....

I think Kenyans are jumping the gun.Kwanza wange-bid kuandaa mshindano kama African Cup of Nations ili kujipima ubavu kama wanaweza ku-deliver na hiyo ingewapa head start ili kujua mapungufu yaliyo kwenye facilities zao na namna za kuyakabili pindi watapohitajiwa ku-deliver at International level.
Olympic sio Umitashumta au Kagame Cup jamani unaweza kupewa nafasi ya upendeleo uandae halafu katikati ikabidi ihamishiwe nchi nyingine.

LONDON – An audacious plan for the United States and Canada to team up and co-host the 2024 Olympic Games has received strong early support.

City leaders from Buffalo, N.Y., and Toronto, which are separated by 100 miles, have openly discussed the option of trying to make the 2024 Games the first OIympics to officially be staged in more than one country.

Toronto city councilor James Pasternak has pushed the idea. He told the Toronto Sun that any bid for the Games should include partnering with an American city to cut down on the severe financial costs involved with staging the world's biggest festival of sport.

Kenya walipewa nafasi ya Host African Cup of nations and they couldn't do it. South Africa had to bail them out eventually! Based on their record alone, it will be a gheto dream to suggest that they are going to host the Olympic comes 2024.

loool...i like the way you guys burst into defeat and critisism whenever anyone dares to dream........... We wont stop dreaming, and be put into a box by simpletons.....

Hahah You talk, Kenyans Act! There is something taking root in Kenya but it appears many are too busy talking to notice! Nairobi 2024!

Kenya will bid to become the first African nation to host the Olympic Games in 2024, Raila Odinga, the country's prime minister, has said. Speaking to the FT in London, Mr Odinga said sub-Saharan Africa's time to host the games had come. The region's trillion-dollar economy was set to boom over the next decade, he said, and for Kenya, east Africa's leading economy, hosting the Olympics would bring a psychological boost as well as "enormous benefits" in terms of investment in infrastructure.

"Kenya had the confidence as far back as 1968 to consider bidding for the Olympics," he said. But in 2004, when the idea was raised again, local newspapers scoffed, illustrating the drift Kenya experienced after the heady days of independence in 1963.

"That is the spirit we need to recapture. We need to bring back that confidence and say we can do it. It is necessary to take a look back at where are coming from and where we want to go, because we have been drifting for too long," he said, alluding to the decades of stagnation and misrule under the autocratic Daniel Arap Moi.

Mr Odinga, who shares power in a coalition government forged after violence surrounding the 2007 presidential elections, leads opinion polls again in what promises to be an unusual poll next March. Two rival candidates, including the son of former independence leader Jomo Kenyatta, remain in the race despite having been charged by the International Criminal Court with crimes against humanity.

A Kenyan bid would be welcomed by the International Olympic Committee but early indications are it would face stiff competition. The IOC is expecting a strong pitch from US cities, including New York and San Francisco, now that a long-standing disagreement over the division of television and sponsorship revenues has been settled.

Durban is also a possible 2024 bidder after Jacques Rogge, the IOC president, said he would love to have seen an African bid for the 2020 games.

Other countries thinking about bidding for 2024 include Argentina, Morocco and Egypt. A new bid from Doha, ejected from the 2020 race over scheduling concerns, is expected.

The IOC said it was not aware of Kenya's interest but added: "The [IOC] president has made it absolutely clear that we would love a good bid from Africa."

The shortlist for the 2020 race is made up of Istanbul, Tokyo and Madrid.

With seven medals already in the bag at the London Olympics, including one gold for Ezekiel Kemboi in the 3,000m steeplechase and another for David Lekuta Rudisha in the 800m in a world record time, and with hopes high for Sunday's marathon, Kenya is poised to rival South Africa as the most successful African country at the London games.

Asked how he would sell the project, likely to cost as much as $15bn, to Kenyans, Mr Odinga pointed to the renaissance that cities such as Tokyo, Seoul, Atlanta and Mexico City had received when they hosted the games.

anyone doubting Nairobi's capacity to host olympics should think twice, and the problem with most wabongo is they have a defeatist and negative mentality and thats why even after having a huge country full of resources they are still backwards and picking up child fights with malawi

Kenya will most probably not get the rights for 2024....but the fact is cities do not bid once and they win.. It takes several attempts before they are taken seriously. Im glad Nairobi is taking this first bold and very important step. I just wonder when Dar will ever be taken seriously on the world stage if the attitudes on this thread are anything to go by.

Furthermore national morale will be boosted. Its important for people to believe in themselves and not just whine and whine about how poor and incapable they are. I say lets bid and see how it goes. It will be our announcement of our arrival on the international stage economically and culturally. People will begin to look at Nairobi differently.

I think it will take more than talk so many and forgotten promises have fallen by the wayside.

I am not trying to belittling Kenyans but you guys don't have the resources to host the Olympics, Period. It is imperative to understand that Mr. Odinga is in a campaign mode and he will say anything to be elected. Let me put it bluntly, one mini-freeway shouldn't be used as a factor in hosting the Olympics. Forget about infrastructure for a minute, who in his right mind will bring those games to a place where bombs are exploding every three months?

Hasara tupu.

shallow and grotesque reasoning. does life stop after bombing!? After 9/11 US bombings life went on. After all those that have shown the capacity to host any major games US UK have been hit by bombs.

Stop comparing apples and oranges, please! After Sept 11, the USA beefed security and they have not had similar incident. The situation in Kenya is different, every three months people are being killed and the government seems to be clueless.
