Former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Al-Hajj Ali Hassan Mwinyi, has lashed out at people who incite religious riots on the pretext of preaching the name of God, saying that was totally against the Islamic teachings.

Addressing hundreds of people shortly before officially opening the Muhajirana Mosque at Majengo area here on Saturday, the retired president noted that Islamic teachings were about one being humble, calm and above all, peace and tranquility.
Obviously referring to recent riots in Zanzibar early this month, Al-Hajj Mwinyi, observed that what some Muslims in the country had just done was not according to Prophet Mohammad (SAW) teachings, but rather hooliganism at its best.
"So many Muslim groups with evil intention were coming up everywhere. Boko Haram, Al-Shabab, Uamsho and you name it… Funny enough, they all pretend to have the Muslim teachings at heart even better than Prophet Mohammad (SAW) himself," Al-Hajj Mwinyi wondered.
The former president told the anxious gathering that Christianity entered in Zanzibar away back in 1832 and since then religious tolerance has been the trademark of both Christians and Muslims residing in the Isles.
"Now these people who think they have come to awake the ‘sleeping' Muslims in the country start causing unnecessary unrests by setting on fire churches, that is not Islam, I call it hooliganism," he said.
Al-Hajj Mwinyi urged all Muslims in the country to utilize mosques responsibly as worshipping houses and running of other well intended community activities instead of using them as riot grooming grounds.
