President Yoweri Museveni has commissioned new military facilities, equipment and training infrastructure developed under Uganda’s defence cooperation with Russia, as the government seeks to strengthen the operational capacity of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

The launch took place on Thursday at the 154 Marine Battalion School in Kalangalo during a two-day engagement between Ugandan military officials and a Russian delegation led by Lt. Gen. Aleksandr Kshimovskii.

The discussions focused on military training, marine security, modern warfare technology and equipment maintenance, areas considered important in preparing the UPDF to respond to emerging security threats.

Addressing the military team, Museveni urged the UPDF to embrace advances in science and technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, to improve military readiness and operations.

He emphasised the need for the armed forces to keep pace with changing technology as modern warfare increasingly relies on advanced equipment, automated systems and digital capabilities.

The engagement forms part of Uganda’s defence cooperation with Russia, which includes efforts to strengthen military training, technical capacity and the maintenance of military equipment.
