Mubarak Munyagwa Sserunga, popularly known as "Mugati gwa Bata," is a Ugandan politician and former Kawempe South Member of Parliament. He is a lawyer by training and previously served as Mayor of Kawempe Division from 2011 to 2016. In July 2025 he was sworn in as leader of the Common Man's Party (CMP), a rebrand of the dormant Uganda Economic Party, and has since declared his intention to run for president in the 2026 Uganda general election, positioning himself as a challenger to President Yoweri Museveni.
The CMP's symbol is a silver serving tray, chosen to represent the idea that "every Ugandan should have a share of the national cake." This is the origin of the tray-of-rice imagery associated with him. The tray is a campaign symbol.
Claim:
A viral image/video circulating on X (posted by an account under the handle "Ssekatte Ratiifu (N.U.P)") shows Munyagwa feeding a bald-headed baby boy from a large plate of rice at what appears to be a public event. The caption, "Munyagwa being Munyangwa even on his own Son,"
Findings:
Running the image through Hive Moderation's AI-detection tool returns a 97.2% likelihood that the image is AI-generated, with a low (0.3%) deepfake probability.
During a recent interview with Sanyuka TV, Munyagwa strongly refuted allegations that the individual featured in the circulating content is his son. He further alleged that supporters sympathetic to the National Unity Platform (NUP) were responsible for producing and disseminating the images and video in an effort to discredit him politically.
Verdict: False
The claim that the child is Munyagwa's son appears to be built on manufactured content, not a real event.
