Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said that former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago will be released to police today, according to a post published on his X account.
The Chief of Defence Forces made the announcement a day after Lukwago was reportedly abducted by security operatives from his home in Wakaliga, Kampala, under circumstances that sparked condemnation from opposition leaders, lawyers, human rights activists and some supporters of the Chief of Defense Forces himself.
Lukwago, who is also president of the People's Front for Freedom (PFF) and a member of Dr. Kizza Besigye's legal team, was reportedly detained as he sought to pursue legal action against Gen. Muhoozi over alleged threats made on social media.
As of publication, there had been no independent confirmation that Lukwago had been released. His lawyers and family had earlier demanded his immediate and unconditional release, while the Uganda Law Society condemned his detention and called for respect for the rule of law.
