Don't know if you figured it out already but here's something from the manual,

According to the-Nikon-S9300 manual, this error message is generated when the mode dial (the dial that switches the-camera-between taking pictures, taking-videos, viewing pictures, modifying settings, etc.) is positioned between two different modes. Since the camera isn't sure what mode to operate in, it shuts off. The solution, then, is to rotate the mode dial so that it is on a single mode.-If, however, the mode dial already is set to a single mode, then there is something wrong with the circuitry or physical construction of the dial -- it isn't recognizing that the dial is set to a mode already.
