Concern is growing over the whereabouts of former Ethics and Integrity Minister and veteran women's rights activist Miria Matembe, who has reportedly been missing since security operatives raided her home in Luzira earlier this week. Her family says they have not heard from her since the operation and are appealing for information about her whereabouts.
Matembe's husband, Nehemiah Matembe, said security personnel searched their home but failed to explain who they were or the purpose of the operation. He said the officers left without taking anything after finding that Matembe was not at home. Family friend Junior Dave Kazoora said she had left for her routine morning jog on the day of the raid and never returned.
According to the family, the raid involved both uniformed soldiers and plain-clothed operatives who arrived in a vehicle commonly referred to as a "drone." They reportedly searched every room in the house while armed soldiers guarded the compound. The family believes the operation may have been intended to arrest or abduct Matembe.
The incident has drawn condemnation from opposition leaders and civil society activists. Barbie Kyagulanyi expressed solidarity with Matembe and human rights lawyer Sarah Bireete, whose home was also reportedly searched this week. Women's rights groups have called on security agencies to respect constitutional rights and due process, warning against arbitrary raids and intimidation.
Matembe, a former minister and one of the framers of Uganda's 1995 Constitution, has in recent years become an outspoken critic of the government, frequently speaking out against alleged human rights abuses, enforced disappearances, and the role of security agencies in politics. As of Saturday, security agencies had not issued an official statement on her whereabouts or the reason for the raid.
