(R)Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama,
The government has set the end of August as the deadline to clear the backlog of digital number plates after the Minister of State for Transport, Fred Byamukama, inspected the production facility and secured fresh commitments from the contractor implementing the Digital Number Plate Programme.
The visit comes amid growing frustration among motorists, vehicle dealers and importers over prolonged delays in the issuance of number plates for newly imported vehicles, motorcycles, replacement plates and change-of-plate applications.
Byamukama said the inspection was intended to assess the contractor’s production capacity and agree on firm timelines for restoring normal services.
We have come to see the production process ourselves and to agree firm timelines with the contractor,” he said.
According to the Ministry of Works and Transport, the contractor has committed to resolving current production capacity constraints affecting new vehicle and motorcycle registrations within three weeks.
The ministry said it expects the backlog for new registrations to be cleared by the end of July, with all outstanding cases targeted for completion by Aug. 30.
To prevent future shortages, the contractor will increase production to build a surplus of about 3,000 number plates every month, creating a reserve stock of at least 11,000 plates by the end of August.
The ministry also pledged to strengthen enforcement against brokers exploiting motorists affected by the delays, warning the public not to pay middlemen offering to secure number plates through unofficial channels.
Emergency cases involving motorists who lost plates through accidents or theft will continue to be handled despite limited stock, while the government said a separate plan for pending change-of-plate applications would be announced soon.
The Ministry of Works and Transport said it will meet the contractor again later this week to review progress and ensure the agreed timelines are met.
