Minerals trader arraigned over 700m/- money laundering

A dealer in minerals, Enock Kantelu (30), from Migongo Masasi in Mtwara region yesterday appeared in the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court in Dar es Salaam charged with money laundering amounting to 700m/-.
Reading the charge sheet, Senior State Attorney Eliza Beth Kaganda alleged that the accused committed the offence on diverse dates between January 2010 and February 24, this year, in Dar es Salaam.
It was further alleged before Resident Magistrate Victoria Nongwa that on the said dates the accused engaged in a transaction involving money in his NBC account number 085201024743 amounting to 700m/- while he knew or ought to have known that the said money was proceeds from illegal mining.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded because the offence he is charged with it not bailable.
Kaganda told the court that investigation into the case was incomplete and the magistrate adjourned the case to March 14, this year, when it comes up for another mention.
Meanwhile, the court adjourned the case against 51 University of Dar es Salaam students who are charged with unlawful assembly and rioting to March 13, this year, because two of the accused were not in court.
Kaganda named the absent accused as Moris Derrick and Said John, who are still in custody for failure to meet bail conditions.
Prosecutor Kaganda informed the court that the case had came up for preliminary hearing.
Magistrate Walialwande Lema, who presides over the case, issued the summons for the accused Said John so that he could appear in court on the fixed date.
Other accused in the case are Evaris Ambrose, Hellen Moshi, Matrona Babu, Rolanda Wilfred, Evon Gumbi, Lugiko Mathias, Evarist Wilson, Mushi Michael and Mlazi Kumbuka.
Others are Baraka John, Ayoub Oscar, Maduhu Japhet, Salehe Twalibu,
Ganus Ibrahim, Alaxander Wasanga, Adorinari Alphonce, Glory Masawe, Happy Amulike, Elisia Mpangala, Frida Timoth, Stellah Msofe, Charles Mwakajile, Reyson Masasi, Betwel Martin, Peter Lutufyo and Mmasy Stephen.
Others are: Mtenga Honoli, Modekae Francis, Anthony Mganyizi, Paulo Muna, Raphael Jonathan, Lugemila Venance, Domina Fulgence, Lina Happygod, Asha Twaha, Jenifa Kameta, Francisca Mduma and Neema Majaliwa.
