Mohamed Said, anasimulia:

"Nikiwa mtoto mdogo katika miaka ya katikati ya sitini, nilikuwa nikisikiliza muziki wa Sal Davis... nikiimba na mwingine nikipiga kwenye gitaa langu.

Siku moja baada ya karibu miaka 40, mimi hapa Dar es Salaam nakutana na Sal Davis kwenye baraza letu pale Lumumba usiku. Mimi nilishtuka pale, nikamwambia 'Wewe Sal Davis? Sal Davis ikawa ni mada kubwa mimi bwana, wewe ni mwanangu bwana.'

Basi nikamwambia 'Aah bwana, miaka mingi sijakuona.' Basi na yeye akawa amefurahi kuona kuwa kuna mtu amemtambua, wale watu walikuwa wamekaa naye pale hawakuweko wanamjua huyu ni nani. Nikawaambia 'Ninyi hammwelewimjui Sal Davis?'

Mimi nili fanya mzaha kidogo, nikawa nilipomwona nikazikumbuka zile nyimbo alizokuwa anaimba na mimi nilikuwa naimba nikiwa mdogo... 'Makini, makini...' mwenyewe anachukua: 'Makini ya kini...', ingine 'Mama, it is my system men...' mwenyewe anachukua: 'It's my system men, it's my... in the many system eyes, mama this menu is crazy...'

Wale watu wote pale walishangaa, 'Mwalimu na wewe unajua kuimba?' Nikasema mimi naimba huyu, sasa Sal Davis mwenyewe kaimba pale.

Sasa tulipoachana pale mimi nikasema, 'This is a big story.' Mimi nikaandika makala, nikaipeleka The EastAfrican.

Wale wakaoona mimi na mwadithia Sal Davis kupitia maisha yangu. Aliyejitokeza anaitwa James Odindo, akasema 'Mwalimu Ndowah, badilisha hii makala. Wewe utapata publicity kuhusu sisi, free publicity. Tunataka utuandikie kuhusu Sal Davis.'

Wana niandikia, 'Mwalimu, Sal Davis yuko wapi huyu?' Nikawaambia 'Sal Davis yuko Dar es Salaam hapa.'

Na mimi ni wapelekee picha za Sal Davis, basi EastAfrican ndio walikuwa wanaenda kwenye kumbukumbu zao, wakatoa picha zake wakaiweka kwenye makala.
Nikamwambia 'Sal Davis bwana, wewe ni mtu mkubwa bwana.' Nikamshawishi ndio nikaandika... tukaandika kitabu chake.

Sasa siku moja nikamwonyesha publisher mmoja, akaniambia 'Mwalimu, hii bwana this is a gold mine bwana.

Nikamwambia 'Sal, hiki kitabu Mazrui atuandikie foreword.' Na mimi Mazrui kwa bahati nzuri tunafahamiana. Bahati mbaya Mazrui amefariki... sasa ndio tukamtafuta rafiki yake mmoja amerejea bwawani kuwa BBC, ndiye aliyempokea Sal Davis alipompokea Mazrui BBC pale.

Anyway, sasa ndio tunasubiri foreword ichapwe, nadhani inaweza kuchukua mwezi hivi utakiona mtandaoni... Sal Davis!"

Sal Davis, The Establishment and "Back in Dubai"

By 1980s Dubai's Expatriate population had grown
They identified with Dubai as their home albeit not their permanent home.
Nevertheless when Sal Davis's song Back in Dubai was broadcast on local radio,
it immediately connected with Dubai's Expatriate Community.
Back in Dubai is still remembered and continues to be played and sung today.

About Sal Davis

A%20SalDavisRecord2.png
Salim Abdallah Salim - 'Sal Davis' born in Mombasa on March 31, 1941. Went to the UK to study his ‘‘O’’ Levels at Portsmouth College of Technology.

He abandoned his ambitions to study law and instead plunged into show business, performing cover versions of his favourite calypso songs by Harry Belafonte in nightclubs.

By 1962 he was a professional singer, adopting the stage name Sal Davis. Sal is a short form of his first name while Davis is taken from his musical idol Sammy Davis Jr. Sal played a major part in Kenya's Independence celebrations in 1963, recording the song Uhuru in praise of the federation of the three East African states.

He also performed at the Independence Civic Ball alongside Harry Belafonte and South African icon Miriam Makeba. Sal enjoyed a string of hits in the 1960s, notably Makini, the flip side to the single Uhuru, and his version of Ray Charles' song, Unchain My Heart.

He also worked as a broadcaster with the BBC from 1964 to 1966, presenting news and current affairs, and Voice of Kenya, presenting Sundowner on radio and TV current affairs programme, Mambo Leo.

In 1967, he ran The Sal Davis Night Spot, which later became the New Florida Night Club on Nairobi’s Koinange Street. He also went into the aviation business with Davis Air Limited owning three light aircraft operating out of Wilson Airport. Though officially retired in Nyali, Mombasa, Sal occasionally joins his daughter, Maia von Lekow, during her own performances.

Oh your morning light
never looked so well
on the day that I left you
I made a mistake, I could tell
When a southern breeze
gave a last embrace
I was caught in the tide
that was rushing from place to place

BACK IN DUBAI

there’s a sun
and it shines there all the time
going home
to the smiles
on the faces of kids who remind me
Dubai is mine

BACK IN DUBAI

there’s a song
and they sing it there all the time
I can hear in the crowds
there's a voice to be heard
and I heard it singing out loud

Through the shifting sands
I lost the track
but as long as you’re calling I know I can find my way back
so hoist the sail
I’m homeward bound
I’m longing to feel my feet standing on my ground

BACK IN DUBAI

and it shines there all the time
going home
to the smiles
on the faces of kids who remind me
Dubai is mine
