Hull KR capitalised on a woeful Leeds performance to end their own poor run, and ease the pressure that had been building on their coach, Justin Morgan, and high-profile signing Willie Mason.
Rovers had suffered three consecutive defeats since beating the Crusaders on Mason's debut last month, their single win in the last seven games. So they showed impressive character to come back from an early 10-0 deficit and put a faltering season back on track.
There was nothing spectacular from Mason, rather it was lesser lights such as Ben Galea, Ben Cockayne and especially the Leeds academy product Scott Murrell who inspired a burst of 28 unanswered points in 24 minutes either side of half-time against pitiful Leeds resistance.
Murrell, who has been forced to switch from loose-forward to scrum-half by the extended absence of Rovers' Australian playmaker Michael Dobson, scored a try – from a Cockayne pass that drifted at least a yard forward – and also landed his first four conversion attempts.
Michael Vella, returning after a month out with a knee injury, surged over for the try that began the fightback, and Kris Welham and Matt Cook also crossed before Murrell established a 24-10 half-time lead.
Leeds conceded another soft try to Liam Colbon early in the second half, and although they responded with four tries of their own – including a spectacular second for Kallum Watkins – scores from Sam Latus and Ben Galea kept Rovers out of reach.

Castleford cruised back to the top of the Super League table with a nine-try romp against a Salford team whose season continues to lurch from crisis to crisis. The club's head coach, Shaun McRae, has been on indefinite sick leave since the end of February and last week one of his former assistants, Malcolm Alker, was also sent home from training in circumstances that remain mysterious.
Alker, a club stalwart who joined the coaching staff when he retired at the end of last season, has handed the matter to the Rugby League Players Association and is awaiting the date of a hearing. He did not travel to Castleford and Steve Simms, Salford's director of rugby who has been in caretaker charge throughout McRae's extended absence, refused to shed any light on the latest off-field problems to undermine the City Reds. "It's an in-house thing," Simms said. "We haven't got any more problems than any other club." Apart, that is, from having one coach on sick leave and another in dispute.
Given the circumstances, it was a surprise that a Castleford team who have been the surprise packet of the season took until the last five minutes of the first half to seize control. Salford led 10-6 when the enterprising wing Jodie Broughton, having beaten Richie Owen to score their first try, sent Vinnie Anderson down the left for a second.
Kirk Dixon converted his own powerful finish to put Cas ahead again before a burst of three tries in five minutes from Richie Mathers, Joe Arundel and a second from Nick Youngquest took them 30-10 clear at half-time.
Four more tries followed in the second half from Dean Widders, the teenage interchange hooker Daryl Clark, Arundel's second, and a cracker from Owen as he continues his comeback from a broken and infected leg. Danny Orr and Rangi Chase pulled the strings masterfully, as they have been doing all season, and the admirable Dixon kicked eight of his nine conversion attempts for a personal haul of 20 points. A seventh win in eight matches lifted Cas back above Huddersfield on points difference.
With their next two games against Harlequins and Wakefield, the Tigers have every chance to extend their surprising stay at the summit until Easter at least.
Castleford Tigers Mathers; Owen, Arundel, Dixon, Youngquest; Chase, Orr (capt); Emmitt, Hudson, Huby, Aspinwall, Holmes, Ferres. Interchange Jackson, Fozzard, Widders, Clark.
Tries Youngquest 2, Dixon, Mathers, Arundel 2, Widders, Clark, Owen. Goals Dixon 8
Salford City Reds Patten; Henry, Nero, Ratchford, Broughton; Smith, Holdsworth (capt); Cashmere, Godwin, Boyle, Adamson, Anderson, Wild. Interchange Paleaaesina, Sidlow, Neal, Sneyd.
Tries Broughton, Anderson, Holdsworth, Sidlow. Goals Holdsworth 2.
Referee P Bentham. Attendance 6,741.
