    "I thought we played very well in the second half, up until we scored," said the Rangers manager, Walter Smith. "We allowed Sporting a little bit too much of the ball after that, which culminated in the equaliser. To lose out at the end was a blow to us."
    Steven Whittaker had sent Ibrox into raptures &#8211; the level of celebration illustrated that European competition still has importance in these parts &#8211; with a 66th-minute header. Rangers drew 0-0 with Sporting here on their way to the 2008 Uefa Cup final, with a 2-0 win in Portugal securing a place in the last four. With that in mind, this was far from a ruinous result for Rangers but a clean sheet would have been cherished by their manager.
    Sporting are third in Portugal and their visit to Glasgow was preceded by tales of infighting. There was little sign of such turmoil during a tidy start by the visitors, Hélder Postiga narrowly failing to put them in front after 20 minutes with an angled shot. Rangers' play was too frantic but they mounted a response just after the half-hour.
    Smart play by El Hadji Diouf released Whittaker on the right flank, with Kyle Lafferty heading the midfielder's near-post cross just wide. Diouf ended the first half in a rage after picking up a booking for diving on the edge of the Sporting penalty area.
    Rangers started the second half in more endearing fashion. Whittaker should have sent them in front after just 16 seconds but Rui Patrício saved his one-on-one attempt and Lafferty lobbed wastefully over shortly after.
    Whittaker at least made amends for his aberration. Vladimir Weiss was the supplier from a corner, which the former Hibernian player powerfully headed home. A Sporting riposte was to follow, with Fernández rising unchallenged to meet a João Pereira cross.
    There remained time for Lafferty to pass up two chances and Rangers can take heart from the likelihood that more should arrive in Lisbon next week.
    The Rangers captain, David Weir, insisted his team could score in Portugal. "There's no doubt we can," he told ESPN. "The tie's still wide open, there's still all to play for."

Corluka set for 'few weeks' out

Tottenham have confirmed that Vedran Corluka suffered a sprained ankle against AC Milan and should be back in full training in a "few weeks".
Corluka had to be carried off on a stretcher in the second half of Spurs' 1-0 win over AC Milan in the San Siro on Tuesday, after being hit with a late two-footed sliding challenge from Mathieu Flamini.


Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp lambasted the former Arsenal man for the tackle, which he believes could have easily broken the Croatian's leg.
The right-back feared the tackle may have ended his season but a scan on his injured ankle revealed limited damage, with the club hopeful that he will return to light training next week after the removal of a protective boot which he put was given in the aftermath of the challenge.
A Tottenham statement read: "Vedran Corluka will remain immobilised in a protective boot for the next four days after a scan determined that he had sprained part of his ankle joint capsule following a challenge from Mathieu Flamini during Tuesday's Champions League round of 16 first-leg victory over AC Milan.
"Following a clinical examination by a foot and ankle specialist this afternoon, it has been recommended that Vedran make a gradual return to training starting next week.
"Should the Croatia international feel no ill effects of the injury during his gradual return to training then he should be back in full training in a few weeks."

    @Z, Would be glad to do that I will post dates I will be there as soon as my wife lets me know when she has got to be there,I will be flying into Newark with her then hoping to hit some battle sites from Colonial and Civil wars.

    There's a difference between Shawcroft and Flamini's. Flamini went studs up and two footed towards the ball heading towards the touchline. Shaw went into the player. If they want to ban Flamini for the rest of the year I'm fine with it. It was idiot and horrible. But there is a difference. They are both the actions of creeps but 1 is worse than the other.

    Irish, I didnt get a chance to conclude our conversation regarding "the best defender". My pick was Pique. Close call with Vidic whos dominant on corners both sides of the pitch but overall id give the Spaniard the edge.

    Im a Milan fan and i help my hand over my mouth when flamini made that tackle, it should have been a red. Peoples careers get ended like that. No one wants to see that no matter what team you support. Im happy hes alright.
