Sammy Almahri, from New York City, has been wanted since 28-year-old Nadine Aburas was found in a Cardiff hotel room on New Year's Eve.

South Wales Police confirm Almahri, 44, had been detained in the east African country.

DS Paul Hurley said his force had 'worked closely' with Tanzanian police to find the suspect.

He said: "This has been a fast moving and complex investigation involving law enforcement agencies from three continents and we are particularly grateful for the professional cooperation we have received from the Tanzanian police.

Miss Aburas had been friends with Mr Almahri for some time and had visited him in the United States before.

It is believed the two were in a long-distance relationship.

However, police think this was the first time the two had met in the UK.

It is believed Mr Almahri flew into Britain on Boxing Day and booked a room in the £135-a-night Future Inn hotel in the Welsh capital's fashionable Bay area.

The two checked into the hotel at 8.25pm on December 30 and went out before returning at around 11pm.

Nadine Aburas' mother, Andrea

Miss Aburas' body was found by hotel staff at around noon on New Year's Day - nine hours after Mr Almahri left the hotel.

The suspect had gone to Heathrow Airport and taken a flight to Bahrain, and then went to Doha, Qatar, before flying to Tanzania.

Speaking before the arrest, Miss Aburas' mother, Andrea had called on Mr Almahri to hand himself in.

The 58-year-old said: "You told us that you loved Nadine - if this is true then please help the police help you."
