Manuel Mireles Valverde is a Mexican medical doctor and former leader and founder of the paramilitary self-defense groups that fought against the Knights Templar Cartel and other cartels, in the state of Michoacan and others, in México. Mireles emerged as an important figure within the self-defense militias during the fall of 2013 as self-defense groups were fighting against the Knights Templar Cartel in Apatzingán, Tepalcatepec, and other municipalities on the Michoacán coast. He describes his motivation to participate in the armed self-defense groups as stemming from the abuse of the Knights Templar Cartel against himself and his family – he has himself been kidnapped by the cartel, which has also murdered several of his family members causing him to take up arms in defense of his community of Tepalcatepec
Involvement in Autodefensas
Mireles states he joined the self-defense group to protect his family against the Knights Templar Cartel, after he was kidnapped by the cartel which demanded money to release him, and also had murdered several of his relatives.[9]
On 4 January 2014, Mireles was injured in a plane crash[10] as he was traveling to the community of Zicuiran
Mireles started to speak out three years ago. A gifted orator who attacked the corruption of local government and police in the face of narco oppression, he struck a chord with ordinary citizens. Harnessing people’s anger and resentment, he assembled a motley crew of lumberjacks, fruit pickers and other folk, who then set about storming drug labs and fighting cartel members.
Before long, the Autodefensas had grabbed de facto control not just of Tepalcatepec but 28 other municipalities in Michoacan too, setting up citizen councils in each. This amounted to about a third of one of the most hotly contested states in the country.
A silver fox in his mid-50s, Mireles is a charismatic figure. He has featured on the cover of Mexican magazines and on national news bulletins, and has been feted like a celebrity on the streets. And, since 2013, his vigilante model has transferred to six other “problem” states in Mexico. By the beginning of last year, the impossible suddenly seemed possible: the little man overcoming the lawless conglomerates. David was on the point of toppling Goliath.
“Dr. Mireles is an amazing guy,” his lawyer Javier Livas tells me, over the phone from Michoacan. “He went from town to town inspiring citizen after citizen, saying, ’It doesn’t have to be this way. You don’t have to accept the killings and kidnappings and extortion. You can reclaim your towns.’ And they did.”
At first, says Livas, the central government was favourable towards him. By chasing down the cartels, “essentially he was doing its job for them.”
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto sent Alfredo Castillo to Michoacan as security tsar. The latter demanded the Autodefensas give up their arms and join a federal force called the Rural Defence Corps instead. A mistrustful Mireles was steadfast in his opposition to this, but by now he’d become a victim of his own success: the vigilante movement had grown so big – to 10,000 in number, by some estimates – that rivals emerged aplenty who challenged his say.
To make matters worse, in January 2014 he was involved in a plane crash, in which the pilot died. The official cause was pilot error, but given the number of opponents Mireles had, many suspected foul play.
Livas, however, remains positive. “Dr. Mireles showed what one man can achieve,” he says. “He’s an inspiration to all of us as we seek a way out of this war. Surrender isn’t the only option.”
