A suspected robbery targeting a prospective car buyer has been foiled in Luuka District after members of the public intervened and helped apprehend one of the suspects.
The incident happened on August 13, 2026, at about 9am in Mawundo Mufuuwa Village, Bulanga Town Council, where 31-year-old Lule Moses, a mechanic from Bweyogerere-Kirinya in Wakiso District, had travelled after being promised an opportunity to buy a second-hand vehicle in Iganga.
Police say Moses was contacted by David Mutagubya, who offered to take him to see the vehicle. However, after reaching Bulanga, Mutagubya reportedly took him by motorcycle to an isolated area, claiming they needed to meet people who knew where the vehicle was.
According to preliminary investigations, about five men dressed in civilian clothes and armed with sticks then confronted Moses. They allegedly assaulted him and demanded money and his ATM card before taking about Shs12.2 million and a Spack 20 mobile phone.
Moses reportedly raised an alarm and held onto the motorcycle that had brought him to the scene. His cries attracted nearby residents, who intervened and forced the alleged attackers to flee.
Members of the public managed to apprehend Mutagubya and handed him over to police. The motorcycle, a red Bajaj Boxer registration number UAM 147B, was also recovered and is being held as investigations continue.
Samson Lubega, the Busoga North Police spokesperson, said Mutagubya sustained a hand injury during the incident and is receiving treatment.
Police suspect the incident could be connected to a wider robbery network operating in Bulanga Town Council and neighbouring areas. Investigators are pursuing the remaining suspects and efforts are underway to recover the money and other property allegedly stolen.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution when responding to vehicle sale offers, particularly when strangers ask them to travel to isolated locations.
Police have also appealed to anyone with information about the remaining suspects or other related robberies to report to the nearest police station.
