Idriss Deby

He is President of Chad, he has been in power for 29 years
He came into power in 1990 via a wait for it military coup, and has managed to hold on to office via the polls every five years

Omar Al-Bashir
President of Sudan, he has been in power for 30 years
Bashir was a Colonel in the Sudanese army, when he and a group of rogue members of the country’s defence force staged a bloodless coup to take over from Prime Minister Sadiq Al-Mahdi.

Though his descent into power was bloodless, his reign has been anything but as it has been synonymous with the War in Darfur where it is estimated that over 10,000 people lost their lives.
Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir is the seventh President of Sudan from 1989 to 2019 and founder of the National Congress Party

Yoweri Museveni
President of Uganda, he has been in power for 33 years

Museven was Instrumental in toppling his predecessors, the fearsome Idi Amin and Milton Obote. He assumed office in 1986 and has been in power since and was recently re-elected for a fifth term in February 2016.

Hu Sen
Hu Sen is the prime Minister and head of State of Cambodia, he has been in power for 34 years
He has been a prime minister since 1985 when he was 32 years old making him at that time the world's youngest head of government after serving as a foreign minister from 1979
Hun Sen has accumulated highly centralized power within Cambodia, including a personal guard said to have capabilities rivaling those of the country's regular army, making coup attempts virtually impossible

Denis Sassou Nguesso

He is President of the Republic of Congo, he ha been in power for 35 years

Nguesso had two stints as President of the Congo which combined make his time in office 33 years. He assumed power in 1979 and was defeated at the polls in 1992, only to be re-elected in the next elections in 1997.

Nursultan Nazarbayev
He was the president of Kazakhstan and the only known one leader since its independence from the Soviet Union and no election since then has been recognised as free and fair. He resigned on 19 March 2019

Robert Mugabe
He had been in power for 37 years,
Mugabe was a hero and a liberator earlier in his presidency but with the end looming, many citizens took to the streets celebrating the imminent end of his reign and calling for him to step down. A lot can change in 37 years

Ali Khamenei

He has been in power for 38 years
Ali Khamenei is the current Supreme Leader of Iran, he has been in in office since 1989 after being a president from 1981
He survived an assassination attempted himself in 1981 and rose into power following the assassination of his predecessor.

Teodoro Mbasongo
He has been a president of Equatorial Guinea for 40 years

He came to power after ousting his own uncle in 1979 via a bloody coup
He survived an attempted coup in 2004 involving several South African mercenaries

Paul Biya
He has been a president of Cameroon for 44 years
The 84-year old has clung on to power for four decades amid claims of voting irregularities, voter intimidation and fraud.
