Community members and students around Soroti University have been urged to remain calm but vigilant following the confirmed sighting of three leopards in the institution's vicinity.
According to an official statement shared by Soroti University, the predatory cats were first spotted on Wednesday evening. The security situation was further confirmed last evening when the university's closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras captured footage of the three leopards roaming near the campus premises.
In a swift response to the looming human-wildlife conflict risk, a specialized team from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has already been deployed on the ground. The rangers and problem-animal experts are actively tracking the leopards to ensure they are safely captured or herded back to a secure conservation area.
University management and local authorities have strongly advised the public against panic. However, residents are cautioned to maintain a high level of alertness, especially during evening and early morning hours.
