Do you mean your system doesn't work without inserting your operating system cd. What operating system does your laptop use? What is the make and model of your laptop?

If you can't actually get anything to come up - by that I mean that you never even see the initial Windows logo, you can run the Recovery Console from your Windows (XP)?? Installation CD. I don't know what OS you have. I just use Win Xp Installation CD as an example.
Regardless of how you got there, the recovery console will allow you to copy files, undo a recent installation, or fix the master boot record should that have become corrupt.


You can try this as well, the Recovery Console - sometimes fixing the MBR (Master Boot Record) is all that's needed.
