Kween District local government staff, including the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), were on Monday locked out of their offices over what district leaders described as persistent late coming and poor time management.
Kween District LCV Chairperson Paul Majinjach Kapchemaiko ordered police to block access to the district headquarters after accusing civil servants of repeatedly reporting late for duty.
Kapchemaiko said he arrived at the district headquarters at about 7:30am but found that most staff had not reported. According to him, the first employees began arriving at around 9:30am, well after the official reporting time prescribed under the Public Service Standing Orders.
At about 8am, the chairperson deployed police officers at the main entrance and instructed them to prevent staff from accessing the premises.
The employees remained outside the district headquarters for more than three hours before Kapchemaiko allowed them into the compound at about 11:35am.
He subsequently convened an emergency meeting with the staff to address the concerns over punctuality and time management.
The chairperson said the action was intended to draw attention to what he described as a persistent culture of absenteeism and late coming among district employees and to reinforce adherence to public service regulations.
