A dispute over a roasted bush rat locally known as “anyeri” has turned deadly in Kitgum District after a man allegedly killed another during a fight sparked by accusations of eating the delicacy without permission.
The incident occurred on May 8 in Tultul Central Village and involved Okot David and 44-year-old Omony Charles.
According to a police source, the disagreement began after the suspect reportedly discovered that one of his roasted rats was missing. Okot allegedly accused Omony of taking and eating it without permission, triggering a heated confrontation.
The delicacy, commonly consumed in parts of northern Uganda, is usually sold for between Shs500 and Shs1,000.
The argument reportedly escalated into a violent physical fight, during which Omony sustained serious injuries and was left unconscious.
He was rushed to a nearby health centre for treatment but was later pronounced dead.
Police have since arrested Okot David and detained him at Kitgum Central Police Station on murder charges under case reference CRB 281/2026.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as officers continue processing the scene and recording witness statements.
