A domestic dispute in western Uganda, resulted in a man allegedly killing his own toddler during a violent altercation with his wife over food, in Mughete Village in Kitabu Sub-county.
Police identified the suspect as Zalimon Bwambale, who is accused of attacking his wife on Monday night before fatally striking the child during the confrontation.
According to local leaders, the dispute began when the suspect reportedly returned home late at night and was dissatisfied with the meal that had been prepared for supper.
“It is believed that he came back in the middle of the night and found beans and kalo prepared. He demanded a better meal, which triggered a quarrel,” said local leader Robert Bwambale.
The argument quickly escalated into violence, with the woman reportedly attempting to flee while carrying the child on her back. During the chaos, the suspect allegedly picked up a pestle intending to hit his wife, but instead struck the child.
The toddler later died from the injuries sustained.
Following the incident, the suspect fled the area but was tracked down by residents and arrested at around 4:00am before being handed over to police.
Authorities said tensions flared during the arrest, with angry residents attempting to attack the police vehicle and demanding that the suspect be handed over for mob justice. Police from Kyarumba Town Council intervened and transferred the suspect to Kisinga Police Station as investigations continue.
Residents described the family as one frequently affected by domestic violence. Neighbours said the suspect often returned home late at night and regularly fought with his wife, forcing her to flee for safety.
Local leaders have condemned the killing, describing it as a painful reminder of the devastating consequences of unresolved domestic conflict.
