Participants at ISO Week 2018 in Geneva, Switzerland
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on Friday elected former Kengen Managing Director Edward Njoroge as President during a summit in Geneva, Switzerland.
It was announced that Njoroge would work with the current President until his term became effective in 2020.
"Today ISO elected their new President, Mr. Edward Njoroge.
"He will be President-elect during 2019 as he works hand in hand with President John Walter before his term becomes effective in 2020," a statement from the standards body read.
ISO was founded in 1947 and promotes worldwide proprietary, industrial and commercial standards.
It operates in 162 countries.
Njoroge's candidature had been backed by the government with Trade and Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya stating that it would give the country a bigger voice on a global platform.
“To ensure our voice is heard at the highest level in standardization, the government supports the candidature of Eddy Njoroge for the ISO Presidency 2019-2022. We are indeed hopeful of his appointment at the upcoming ISO General Assembly in September in Geneva, Switzerland.” he stated.
Njoroge, on the other hand, had pledged to enhance developing countries' participation in ISO activities allowing them to reap their full value.
“If elected, I purpose to increase and deepen developing countries’ engagement in the ISO activities so that the nations exploit the full value of international standardization, in particular on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG),” he vowed.
