Kenya: Infrastructure projects that will cement Uhuru legacy

His excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta is in a hurry to finish a lot of projects that will forever entrench his legacy as one of Africa's greatest builders.

Roads
Nairobi Region:
i) Nairobi expressway U/C (27.1 km) running from mlolongo to JKIA and ending up in westlands, this elevated 8,6 and 4 lanes expressway will be the first of it's kind in east,central and parts of southern africa apart from south africa. Completion date December 2020
ii) Western bypass U/C (16.8 km) is the final link of the ring roads around Nairobi totalling to 119 km. This road connects Kikuyu from the southern bypass to ruaka where it joins the northern bypass. The road has been stopped multiple times by courts but final approval by the court of appeal has given a greenlight for the project to continue.
iii) ICD link road U/C (6 km) is a road connecting the southern bypass to Nairobi ICD and includes a pear shaped interchange.

Central Region
i) Kenol-sagana-marua road dualing U/C (84 km), the road connects the northern corridor with the lapsset project. Completion date is 2022.
ii) Mau-mau road U/C (540 km), the road connects central province t the rift valley.It will shorten the route from Nyeri and Muranga counties to Naivasha.
iii) Kiambu-Ngewa-Kibichoi Road (62 km) Connecting kiambu to Thika road.
iv) Ruaka-Banana-Thogoto-Gikambura-Mutarakwa-Limuru road (29 km, almost complete).
v) Upland-Githunguri-Ruiru road U/C (45 km)

North eastern
i) Isiolo-Moyale Highway, Completed (505 km), this road joins lamu port to ethiopia. It is part of the lapsset corridor.
ii) Isiolo-Mandera Highway, U/C (748 km), funded by the world bank to a tune of kes 81 billion this road will connect Lamu port to somalia.
iii) Isiolo-Lokichar Highway, U/C (485 km) is part of lapsset project corridor and will connect lamu port to the eldoret juba highway at lokichar going to nadapal.
iv) Garissa - Isiolo highway, Completed ( 310 km) connects isiolo to the Lamu-Garissa highway which comes from Lamu port.
v) elwak-rhamu road (140 km) Completed.

Coast Region
i) Mombasa-Mariakani Highway U/C (6 lanes, 14 km) to decongest the mombasa port traffic and reduce traffic in Mombasa CBD.
ii) Garsen- witu- lamu highway U/C ( 135.2 km ) part of road connecting Isiolo to Lamu port.
iii) Dongo kundu bypass highway, Completed (18 km, 4 lanes), part of MPARD project to decongest the port of mombasa but also provide alternative routes into and out of Mombasa without passing through CBD.
iv) Dongo kundu phase 2, U/C (12 km,4 lanes).
v)Changamwe - magongo road expansion (4 lanes), Completed , it is meant to shorten time between the airport and the city.
vi) Malindi-sala gate highway completed (118 km), connects kilifi county to taita taveta county
v) Other projects at the Coast include the KSh 11 billion Miritini-Mwache-Kipevu road, the KSh 6.1 billion Mombasa-Kwa Jomvu road and the KSh 2.7 billion Port Reitz/Moi International Airport road.

NB: More road projects from western,Nyanza and eastern will be posted in comments could not finish it all for the post and I am also a little tired.Will continue later.

Tanzania inaongozwa na kichAa na kituko kuwahi kutokea katika dunia hii.

To continue the post, GOK (National government) under Uhuru Kenyatta is on track to finish 10,000 km of highways. To finish off the post I will only mention the major roads across the remaining regions. At the moment across the other regions there are 22 road projects but the major ones are:

i) Busia-Kisumu-Migori Lake ring road, Design phase,(4 lanes, 445 km) starting from Bumala close to the Kenya Uganda Border this road will snake it's way 445 km along the lake shore to connect the Tanzania border in Isebania to Ugandan border in Busia via Kenya. Providing an important and missing link road for interconnectivity in east africa.

ii) Kisumu-Chemelil-Muhoroni-Kaitui highway, U/C, (4 lanes, 67 km) the road will connect sugar factories but also provide an alternative to the Kisumu-Kericho highway which has started experiencing high traffic.

iii) Kisumu-Kakamega-Webuye-Kitale Highway, U/C (4 lanes, 152 km) already sections of the road are complete like the Kisumu-Kakamega section which has 9 interchanges, in progress is the Kakamega -Webuye section, while the Webuye kitale section is complete.

iv) eldoret bypass U/C (4 lanes, 12 km) stalled due to compensation cases in court but has been given the go ahead after NLC came to an agreement with those who have been displaced by the road.

v) eldoret-kitale-lodwar-juba highway U/C ( 460 km) , the road connects south sudan to the northern corridor and will meet the Isiolo-Lodwar road proceeding al the way to Nadapal at the border with south sudan. Majority of the sections of the road are already complete.

Ports And Inland Ports
Mombasa Port
The largest and busiest port in east and central africa has received major upgrades with new equipment since 2015 that has reduced ship turnaround time to 24 hrs.

Recent expansions have also made the port 4 times bigger than Dar es salaam port and bigger than all ports in east africa combined and with the phase 2 expansions to be completed in 2022 the port will have reached a capacity of handing 2.7 million teus annually.

Also under construction is the new kipevu oil terminal which will be ready in August 2021, it will have a capacity of over 100,000 metric tonnes and will be able to handle four vessels at the same time. It will also include an LPG line with expanded capacity to secure gas supply to the country.

On completion, the new oil terminal will have four berths capable of handling the importation and exportation of crude oil, heavy fuel oil, aviation fuel, petrol, and diesel. The New Kipevu Oil Terminal will handle up to four vessels with a Dead Weight Tonnage (DWT) of 200,000 and an LPG line that is hoped to stabilise gas supply in the country. It will have undersea and on-land pipelines that will connect it to Kipevu storage facilities.

New kipevu oil terminal will complement the Old kipevu oil terminal and shimanzi facilities.

The expansions are needed after mombasa port recorded a marked increase in 2019 due to transhipment cargo, to handle 1.4 million teus which means capacity at the port is almost stretched.

Lamu Port

A key project under vision 2030, already the three deep berths (18 m) and container yards built by GOK are ready. Already the world's largest shipping line (Maersk) is anxiously waiting to start operations by start of 2021.

With the current completed berths and container yards, the port can easily rival any port in east africa since it currently has capacity to handle 1.4 million teus

Port throughput is expected to reach 25 million tonnes in 10 years.

Already CCCC has expressed interest to build 6 other berths on a public private partnership model and similar contracts with south african port operator are in negotiation with GOK to build 9 berths on a public private partnership model.

Once complete the port will have 39 berths and it will be the largest port in Africa. It will be 4 times bigger than the largest port in Africa currently.
On completion Lamu port will have a capacity of 24 million teus annually.

Nairobi ICD (Inland Port)
The Nairobi ICD is one of four planned inland container depots.

The Nairobi ICD is complete and has a capacity to handle 500,000 teus annually. It is connected to both the sgr and mgr railway lines.

In 2019 it handled a total of 418,830 teus a 62.4% jump from 2018 when it handled 257,972 teus.

The ICD currently receives 14 sgr cargo trains a day, 6 of which are double stack trains(432 containers per train), further expansion is needed as Mombasa port cargo increases. It is estimated the ICD will handle 40 cargo trains a day by 2025.

Naivasha ICD (Inland port)

The latest entrant into the ICD game.

The port currently handles 4 single stack cargo trains(each carrying 216 containers) daily for cargo heading to Western Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and south sudan. It is projected the cargo trains will reach upto 15 daily by 2022.

A marshalling yard is currently under construction at the ICD to enable swift exchange of cargo from the sgr to the MGR line going to Kampala.

A new 44 km MGR line is also under construction to connect the ICD to the Renovated Naivasha-Nakuru-Longonot-Malaba MGR.

Railway

Mombasa-Nairobi-Naivasha sgr (600 km)

The sgr currently running an average of 18 trains, 14 to Nairobi ICD and 4 to Naivasha ICD has greatly decreased time taken to deliver cargo from Nairobi to Kampala down from 5 days to 2 days.

It has also reduced time taken to ferry passengers between Naivasha and Mombasa and between Nairobi and Mombasa by more than 50%

Nairobi Commuter Rail

This will certainly go down as one of his legacy achievements. Decongesting Nairobi roads has been a major headache for all presidents.

Nairobi Metro commuter rail 200 km of track is being rehabilitated with new 80 lbs sleepers, New and modern commuter train stations and new signaling systems.

Already 11 refurbished DMUs have been procured from spain, with 5 already in the country undergoing inspection and rebranding at the KR workshops. The DMUs have a capacity of three hundred passengers each and will be making hourly shuttles all across Nairobi metro area. The 11 DMUs will be deployed across the 5 lines in phase 1.

Divided into three phases, with phase 1, 98% completed, it has seen the rise of 10 new commuter train stations around Nairobi metro area, 160 km out of 200 km of track already rehabilitated and 15 commuter train stations have also been modernized.

Phase 2 will include a new commuter railway station at JKIA complete with a new tracks connecting to Nairobi central station(dedicated), syokimau and embakasi village commuter stations.

Phase 3 will include new commuter rail tracks (116 km) and stations connecting satellite towns like Ruai, Ngong, Kangundo etc

Once complete in 2024, Nairobi will be the only metropolitan area in sub saharan africa to be 90% covered with a modern and efficient commuter rail with a monthly ridership of 2.6 million commuters.

Nairobi-Nanyuki (240 km) MGR Rehabilitation

This MGR line refurbished at a cost of kes 2.9 billion is already bearing dividends only 2 months after it was launched

It currently moves 12 million litres of fuel to vivo energy depot in Nanyuki monthly.

It currently moves over 9000 tonnes of processed goods weekly and rising from Industries in Thika town heading to Nairobi ICD for further hauling to Mombasa port by the sgr.

Ranchers and small scale farmers in Nanyuki are already in talks with KR to move their cattle to Nairobi and Thika for further processing and small scale farmers of onions, tomatoes, chilli and other vegetables have been advised to form saccos in order to benefit from the economies of scale and cheap transport offered by KR cargo.

Nanyuki being a major tourist destination in Kenya, KR is introducing the old and adventure filled, refurbished sleeper coaches for passenger traffic. I was in the test train and I can assure you the experience is magical you will not regret any coin spent (#DestinationLaikipia).

The line is expected to generate kes 400 million annually for KR.

Naivasha- Kisumu port, Naivasha-Longonot-Malaba MGR rehabilitation

These two lines are currently being rehabilitated with 80 lbs sleepers.

The heavier sleepers are chosen to accommodated heavier cargo trains which will increase the efficiency of Mombasa port, Kisumu port and also to accommodate higher speeds for faster delivery of cargo to Kampala, Rwanda and Kisumu port.

VINCI signs an agreement for the PPP contract for a motorway in Kenya

• First Public Private Partnership (PPP) for VINCI Concessions in Africa
• An approximately €1.3 billion project, a 30 years PPP
• Works performed by VINCI Construction, operation and maintenance ensured by VINCI Highways
• A strategic infrastructure for Kenya’s economic development

The Republic of Kenya, through its Public Private Partnership Unit and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), executed an agreement with Rift Valley Highway, a company owned by VINCI Highways (Lead Member), VINCI Concessions, and Meridiam SAS, for the development of the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway project. The signature occurred in Paris on September 30th 2020 in the presence of Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, and Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya.
The agreement will become effective following the performance of an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment in compliance with the high standards of the World Bank. The financial close of the project is expected to occur by the end of 2021.
The project, worth about €1.3 million, will transform the existing trunk road into a 175-kilometer dual two-lane motorway. Through an availability payment based PPP*, Rift Valley Highway will finance, design, widen, upgrade, operate and maintain this road corridor during 30 years.
The construction works, scheduled to last 42 months, will be carried out with a consortium comprised of VINCI Construction subsidiaries: Sogea-Satom, locally rooted in Kenya and VINCI Construction Terrassement, specialized in large infrastructure projects. VINCI Highways, subsidiary of VINCI Concessions, will capitalize on its technical and operational expertise to implement new traffic management patterns, deploy advanced equipment and maintenance plans and provide local employees with training programs.
In one of the strongest economies in Sub Saharan Africa, this highway will improve the road safety and reduce travel time on this strategic axis between Kenya’s capital city Nairobi, Nakuru and Mau Summit. Crossing along the Rift valley, the highway will also serve as a gateway to touristic development.
It is the first PPP won by VINCI Concessions in Africa.

* Without any traffic risk. Rift Valley Highway income will be based on availability and quality criterion.
