The American people, Governor Romney, and President Obama, deserve our congratulations on their conduct during the recent elections, which were peaceful, respectful, and well informed. However, over the course of the long campaign, several deficiencies in the American electoral system became apparent, including unprecedented levels of opaque political financing, and legal and administrative barriers to voting that disproportionately impact poor communities and minorities. Both of these concerns, and possible remedies, were raised by the Global Commission on Elections, Democracy and Security, and are discussed in their report: 'Deepening Democracy: A Strategy for Improving the Integrity of Elections Worldwide.'
