James Kanyotu (1936–2008) was Kenya’s longest-serving intelligence chief, leading the Directorate of Security Intelligence (Special Branch) from 1965 until his retirement in 1991.

Born in Kirinyaga District, he studied at Alliance High School before earning a teaching diploma from Makerere University.

Kanyotu joined the Kenya Police Force in 1960 and rose rapidly through the ranks. In 1965, he was appointed deputy head of intelligence and subsequently succeeded Bernard Hinga, Kenya’s first intelligence chief.

He remained a central figure in the country’s security apparatus for nearly three decades, overseeing intelligence operations during a critical period in Kenya’s post-independence history.

Following his retirement, Kanyotu became associated with the Goldenberg scandal through his directorship at Goldenberg International.

Despite the controversy, he was regarded as one of Kenya’s wealthiest businessmen at the time of his departure from public service.
