Businessman Hassan Bulwadda has welcomed the government's decision to halt the proposed redevelopment of Kampala City Square, saying he respects President Yoweri Museveni's position and the views of Ugandans who opposed the project.

Speaking after the proposal was overturned, Bulwadda thanked President Museveni for listening to the concerns raised by members of the public. He noted that while many people criticized and even insulted him over the plan, his intention had always been to bring development and improve the area.

"I thank the President for listening to the voice of Ugandans," Bulwadda said, adding that he remains fully supportive of the President's decision.

Bulwadda said he no longer wishes to pursue the redevelopment of City Square and instead supports preserving the landmark in its current form. He suggested that authorities should focus on enhancing the space by adding more greenery and maintaining its status as a public recreational area.

He also emphasized that Kampala still has many other locations that require investment and modernization. According to Bulwadda, he will now direct his efforts toward identifying alternative areas where development projects can be undertaken without attracting similar public opposition.

The proposed redevelopment of City Square had sparked widespread debate, with many Kampala residents, conservationists and civil society groups expressing concern about the potential loss of one of the city's historic green spaces.

With the matter now settled, Bulwadda says he is ready to move forward and explore other opportunities that can contribute to Kampala's growth while respecting public opinion and government guidance.
