Namukwaya (not her real name) has turned to the media seeking advice after discovering that the teenage girl she believed was her husband’s niece is actually his daughter.
For three years, the girl has stayed with the couple during school holidays, and Namukwaya says she welcomed her like her own child — helping with schoolwork, buying her sanitary pads and talking to her about relationships.
When she confronted her husband, he admitted that the girl is his daughter from a previous relationship. He reportedly said the relationship ended six months before he met Namukwaya, but he hid the truth because he feared she would leave him.
Namukwaya says she feels betrayed, not because her husband has a child, but because he kept the truth from her for years while she became deeply attached to the girl.
She has since moved to the guest room and barely speaks to her husband. She has also become distant from the girl, despite knowing that she is not responsible for the deception.
The girl, who does not understand the sudden change, keeps asking why Namukwaya no longer treats her the way she used to.
Namukwaya says she loves the girl but struggles to separate her from the pain caused by her husband’s deception.
What advice would you give her?

She says she never suspected anything until last week, when she overheard the girl crying on the phone, saying: “Daddy does not want me to tell Auntie anything.”
