Deputy Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr Makongoro Mahanga
The fate of the Deputy Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr Makongoro Mahanga, will be known on May 2 this year when the High Court will give its judgment on the case challenging his victory in the 2010 general elections.
Dr Mahanga's (CCM) victory is challenged by Fred Mpendazoe of CHADEMA. The deputy minister, led by his attorney Aliko Mwamanenge, defended himself in court on Thursday saying that there wasn't any chaos at Segerea during campaigns.
However, when asked by the applicant's attorney, Mr Peter Kibatala, that if by any chance he heard and knew that one among the candidates was caught with ballot boxes, Mahanga replied that he heard the rumours but he did not know who it was.
"I heard the report but I did not know who it was and it was not my concern but the police's concern, and I did not get any call from the police," said Dr Mahanga. Mahanga argued before the court that the people of Segerea love him and it is not true that he is afraid to go to some places in the area as claimed by the applicant's attorney.
The deputy minister also said that his victory was fair and square but if the court will find that there were some anomalies then it would affect the results. He pointed out that he was proclaimed the winner with 43,554 votes against 39,150 of Mpendazoe. He also added that his nomination as a candidate in the 2010 elections at Segerea followed all proper procedures of his party contrary to claims by the applicant.
Meanwhile, the Ilala Municipal Director, Mr Gabriel Fuibe, appeared as a witness in the case and said that ballots were strictly secured by police officers, so it is not true that someone was caught with boxes.
