General Mohamed Siad Barre, the last President of a unified Somalia
When he was ousted in a coup by several warlords whose public face was General Mohamed Farah Aideed, Siad Barre escaped to Kenya where he stayed at the Safari Park Hotel for about two months, reportedly incurring expenses amounting to around 360 million shillings.
Due to the dicey situation of hosting the immediate former President of a friendly neighboring country, Moi arranged for Siad Barre to relocate elsewhere, with Moi clearing the hotel bill using public coffers
Somalia has never been the same since, and probably never will. Siad Barre has been lauded as a unifier who welded together the complex clanbased Somali mosaic, while his detractors accuse him of whipping up Somalia's pre-existing Clanism to his advantage in divide-and-rule devilry that still defines sociopolitical life in Somalia
Who knows where Siad Barre went and his eventual fate?
