Former Matungu Member of Parliament David Were is mourning the death of his son, Hannington Were, who was killed during a violent attack in Kisumu County. The tragic incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning along Nyerere Road near Makini School in the Obunga area.
According to reports, Hannington, 39, was walking with a friend towards Mamba Hotel to buy food when they were ambushed by unknown assailants believed to have been riding on motorcycles. Witnesses and family members said the attackers stabbed him twice in the back and struck him on the head with a metal object before fleeing the scene.
He was rushed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, but doctors confirmed he was dead on arrival. His friend reportedly survived the attack with injuries.
The former legislator described his son as peaceful and hardworking, noting that he worked as a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). Police have launched investigations into the killing as residents raise concerns over rising insecurity and night attacks in parts of Kisumu.
