Former Chief Justice David Maraga has urged Parliament to meet right away to pass a set of measures he claims would protect the public from high gasoline costs and has shown solidarity with Kenyans impacted by the countrywide transport shutdown.
In order to help alleviate the energy crisis, he suggested three immediate interventions: temporarily eliminating all fuel levies to stabilise pump prices, exempting all fuel products from VAT, and rerouting additional funds lost due to what he called "budgeted corruption."
Maraga's remarks come as the majority of Kenyans were forced to walk to work and school on Monday morning after a statewide transport sector strike began in protest of high fuel prices.
Due to the anticipated grounding of school buses, some schools have suspended classes as a result of the shutdown, which has affected travel and commercial activities nationwide.
