The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced new fuel prices that will take effect from May 19 to June 14, 2026, bringing slight relief to diesel users while increasing the cost of kerosene.
According to the latest review, diesel prices in Nairobi have been reduced by KSh10.06 per litre and will now retail at KSh232.86. However, kerosene prices have sharply increased by Ksh38.60 per litre to retail at Ksh191.38, while super petrol prices remain unchanged.
The sudden adjustment comes only days after nationwide protests and transport strikes erupted over the high cost of fuel. Transport operators had complained that rising diesel prices were making business operations unsustainable and worsening the cost of living across the country.
EPRA explained that the increase in kerosene prices is meant to address fuel adulteration, where some traders allegedly mix cheaper kerosene with diesel for profit. The regulator says narrowing the price gap between the two products will help curb the illegal practice that damages vehicle engines and affects fuel quality.
While the reduction in diesel prices is expected to ease pressure on transport operators and businesses, the sharp increase in kerosene prices is likely to hit low-income households hardest since many families rely on kerosene for cooking and lighting.
