The world's prosperity index has just been published. The Legatum Institute, a London-based think tank has released the 2015 prosperity index. As it has been the case for the last six years, Norway sits at the top, followed by Switzerland, Denmark, New Zealand and Sweden in the top five.
This year's index has based on eight subindexes: economy, governance, education, health, safety and security, social capital, personal freedom, and entrepreneurship and opportunity.
On the methodology, "the Index is distinctive in that it is the only global measurement of prosperity based on both income and wellbeing". "Traditionally, a nation?s prosperity has been based solely on macroeconomic indicators such as a country?s income, represented either by GDP or by average income per person (GDP per capita). However, most people would agree that prosperity is more than just the accumulation of material wealth. It is also the joy of everyday life and the prospect of being able to build an even better life in the future". You can find methodology and technical appendices at http://www.prosperity.com/#!/
What has captured me the most is Tanzania's rankings. Overall, Tanzania ranks 117 out of the 142 countries surveyed. What is more interesting is when reading the subindex rankings.
Economy: Tanzania sits at 114 out of 142
Governance: Tanzania ranks number 95 out of 142
Education: Tanzania is number 125 out of the 142 countries
Health: Tanzania sits at number 122 out of 142.
Safety and Security: Tanzania sits at 116 out of 142
Social capital: Tanzania is 78th out of the 142 countries
Personal freedom: Tanzania is 94th out of the 142 countries
Entrepreneurship and opportunity: Tanzania sits at number 116 out of 142.
Now that is the reality we need to deal with and have it in our discussions. What Magufuli is doing is okay. But, he needs to go back to the drawing board and ponder how to salvage the situation. Ways and means are all on his table and reach, he just needs to think and act like a statesman and not party man.
