This action is contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ and, in my view, is heartbreakingly irresponsible. Has the pastor of the Florida congregation in question forgotten Jesus' exhortation to 'Love our enemies and those who persecute us' (Matt 5: 44), love our enemies and 'do good to those who do ill to us' (Luke 6: 27-35).
The antagonistic stance taken by the pastor in question flies directly in the face of the foundations of our faith. Additionally, such actions or suggestions merely serve to prevent those most deeply hurt by the events of 9/11 from truly finding healing and peace, for the wounds are ever kept open and raw.
Even in the heat of anger and deeply emotional urges, it is my prayer that, rather than the burning of books, the pastor and congregation meditate upon these gems of scripture, along with Romans 12: 12-21 (especially verse 14 onwards) in which St. Paul outlines the behaviour and responses that will lead to healing and transformation. A night vigil of prayer and fasting, praying for all who have been caught up in this sorry mess from 2001 onwards, along with sharing and contemplation of Holy Scripture (the passages above form an excellent foundation) will accomplish far, far more than a moments act of revenge ever will. Indeed, the above words of Scripture roundly provide sound council against such practices as the proposed retaliatory activity.
IN conclusion, I urge everybody reading and commenting upon this article to pray for the pastor and his flock, that they are truly open to the outworking of the Holy Spirit, coming together as members of the Body of Christ to support, uphold, encourage and comfort one another. Yes, cry out to the Lord from the depths of the heart, but offer it up to God, the anger, the pain, the grief, the soul-felt wounds, and while doing so, consider this;
The lost I will seek out,
The strayed I will bring back,
The injured I will bind up,
The sick I will heal,
Shepherding them rightly.
(Ezekiel 34:16)
Let us uphold the pastor, congregation and those who may be adversely affected in prayer, that through trust in our loving heavenly Father, peace prevails and the Reign of God is advanced.
