Gongodyo was reportedly attacked by a mob on June 5, 2026, after being wrongly accused of theft. He later succumbed to injuries sustained during the assault, sparking outrage among members of the sporting fraternity and renewed concern over cases of mob justice.

Authorities have condemned the incident, urging members of the public to hand suspects over to law enforcement agencies rather than taking the law into their own hands.
