A government minister in Tanzania has called for a "shoot-to-kill" policy against poachers in a radical measure to curb the mass slaughter of elephants.
Khamis Kagasheki's proposal for perpetrators of the illicit ivory trade to be executed "on the spot" divided opinion, with some conservationists backing it as a necessary deterrent but others warning that it would lead to an escalation of violence.......

This is extremely dangerous decision!
The police in Tanzania shooting and kill innocent people now even before that law passed.

If this law of shoot on the spot passed, those police will kill anybody they want using the same excuse! !

The minister need to thing again! Tanzania is not rwanda!

There must be some other way round!

Our trigger happy police might probably shoot poachers and non-poachers alike and at the end of the day we'll hear lots of 'unfortunate' and 'by mistake' ugly news.
'Shoot on sight' is for a disciplined force.I see a killing spree in the near future.

You have a point, but what would ordinary citizens be doing deep in the jungle? All tourists (local or international) do not venture that deep, they watch wildlife from safe designated corridors. Those who venture deep into the jungle must actually be poachers. Get my point?

Not necessarily! How about the masai people, they are everywhere!

No ordinary country a government will allow police to shoot on sight just because they are suspected someone is breaking the law! !

I would imagine that the police should know better than to shoot at unarmed defenseless civilians. It is those found with weapons and slaughtering animals that i mean. Maasais are shuka claded individuals who are not difficult to identify.
Anyhow, tell me how else are governments going to fight this poaching menace? Something drastic has to be done short of which our animals will be extinct.

To surely judge whether the minister is right or wrong one has to understand difficulties faced by those in charge of protecting wild life and kind of poachers they face and try t see whether such measures are necessary
I once heard that heavily armed poachers kill our people who are trying to do their jobs(guards)
