At least eight people were killed and several others feared trapped after a three-storey building collapsed in India’s western city of Bhiwandi on Sunday (July 31).

Bhiwandi is about 40 kilometres (24 miles) from Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra state. Injured casualties were taken to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Several families were residing in the old structure even after the civic authorities has declared it unfit for occupation.

Maharashtra state public works department minister Eknath Shinde said two or three people were still trapped. Incessant rain has been hampering rescue operators. Fire brigade officials were pressed to assist the rescue operations.
