1. HIV/AIDS HIV means Human Immune deficiency Virus and
AIDS means Acquired Immune deficiency Syndrome.
Causes of HIV
The disease is caused by the retro virus called HIV virus.
1. Sexual intercourse with an infected person
2. Blood transmission from infected donor
3. Organ transplant from an infected donor
4. An infected mother to her child during pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding
5. Using unsterilized surgical or skin piercing instruments e.g needles, scaplets, razor blades etc.
6. Sharing toothbrush, shaving blades and nail
cutters with the infected person.
Symptoms:
The following are the symptoms of HIV/AIDS
1. Loss of body weight over five kgs in two
months
2. Persistent fever that lasts longer than a month
3. Diarrhea for more than a month
4. Coughing for more than a month
5. White layer in the mouth and throat
6. Swollen gland especially in the neck and armpits
7. Shortness of breath and gradually getting worse
Prevention
The following are the prevention measures of HIV/AIDS
1. Avoid irresponsible sexual behavior
2. Use sterilized instruments
3. Wear disposable gloves when touching other peoples body fluid
4. Only screened blood and organs should be used for transfusion and transplants respectively.
5. Going for HIV test usually as to know your status
6. Do not share toothbrushes and shaving blades
7. People with HIV should be given Ant Retrieval drugs
8. Pregnant women should attend pre-natal clinics where mother to child infections can be prevented
9. HIV positive others shouldn’t breastfeed their newborn children.
