EAC Countries Unite against Foreign Cyber Attacks

Communications regulators in East Africa are teaming up to combat foreign attacks on communication equipments and systems in East Africa, a top official has said.

Mr Patrick Mwesigwa, the executive director of Uganda Communication Commission said the five East African states are in the process of establishing coordinated Computer Emergence Response Teams (CERTs) aimed at detecting sources of attacks on regional networks by international internet criminals to secure users' information.

CERTs are information, and technology communication expert groups that handle computer security incidents. UCC plans to establish Uganda's CERT in the new financial year that starts in July 2010.

"We are doing this as a region with the help of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and Impact, another international telecommunications organization based in Malaysia," Mr Mwesigwa said last week in Munyonyo during the East Africa Communications Organisations Committees.

The move to establish the regions CERTs comes two months after regional Internet Service Providers like Africa Online, Broadband and others complained about the rise in cyber attacks.

Pamoja na kwamba tuko kwenye jumuiya ya afrika mashariki nchi kama Tanzania ambayo haiku sawa kwenye mambo mengi yanayohusu teknohama lazima iwe macho na makini kwelikweli tusije kushangaa tunamezwa na kulazimika kuingia kwenye mikataba ambayo kwetu inaweza kuwa michungu kwa siku za usoni .

Kwa mfano hatujawa na bodi ya maswala ya teknohama kitaifa tofauti na Kenya au Rwanda ambazo zinazimamia maswala mengi ya teknohama kwenye nchi hizo je sisi tutashiriki vipi mikakati kama hiyo ? Kunatakiwa bodi zilizohuru na zenye maslahi kwetu kama nchi hata kama tutakuwa na ushirikiano na nchi nyingine lazima tuwe na vyetu kwanza .

Kuna suala lingine mfano la Kuinua utendaji kwenye idara zetu za kiusalama kama polisi ambao wanaweza kushirikia na taasisi zingine katika kufuatilia na kuhakikisha malengo yetu yanafikiwa sasa hata huko mbeleni .

Hayo 2 niliyotaja kwa ufupi hapo ni muhimu sana kuangalia kabla ya shuguli nyingine yoyote ambayo inaweza kusababisha sisi kumezwa kwenye jumuiya hii .

Naomba kukuuliza Bwana David mnafanya mikakati gani katika kuhakikisha changamoto hizo na kuhakikisha maslahi yetu kama nchi yanawekwa mbele kwenye haya masuala ya mawasiliano ?
