Dubai claims Heathrow's air traffic crown

Dubai International has taken over from Heathrow as the world's busiest international airport in terms of yearly passenger numbers.

The United Arab Emirates airport said it had just under 70.5 million passengers through in 2014, compared with around 68.1 million for Heathrow.

Dubai Airports said it had reached a "historic milestone".

Heathrow has been trying to increase capacity for a number of years, a spokeswoman said.

The airport operates at around 98% capacity,
"Britain has benefited from being home to the world's largest port or airport for the last 350 years. But lack of capacity at Heathrow means we have inevitably lost our crown to Dubai," the Heathrow spokeswoman said.

Dubai passenger numbers rose 6.1% in the year, Dubai Airports said.
"The shared goal is to make Dubai a global centre of aviation," said Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of Dubai Airports.

It's probably no surprise to anyone who has flown through Atlanta that the city's airport is still the busiest passenger airport in the world.

Some 94.4 million passengers went through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in 2013, a decrease of 1.1% from 2012, according to Airports Council International's latest passenger traffic results for 2013.

Beijing Capital International Airport was in second place with 83.7 million passengers in 2013, an increase of 2.2% over 2012.

London Heathrow Airport remained in third place with 72.4 million passengers, an increase of 3.3%, according to ACI, the worldwide association of airports.

Tokyo International Airport (Haneda), Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport were in fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively, rankings that remained unchanged from 2012.

Dubai jumped from 10th to seventh place with 66.4 million passengers last year and a 15% increase in traffic.

Dubai's airport operator released figures Tuesday showing that 70.5 million passengers streamed through the sparkling halls of Dubai International last year. That's a 6 percent increase over the 66.4 million that the Gulf city's main airport handled in 2013.

The rapid growth puts Dubai squarely ahead of London Heathrow for the first time on a full-year basis as the world's busiest international air hub. Heathrow reported handled 68.1 million international passengers in 2014.

Dubai pulled off the big gains despite having to redirect flights to the city's second airport, Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central, while it overhauled the airport's two side-by-side runways over the summer.

Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths predicts Dubai International will handle a record 79 million passengers this year as it offers "more flights connecting more people to more destinations."

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport remains the planet's busiest passenger airport overall.

The good thing about BBC article it provides number of total passengers, maybe they are talking about "international passengers" only that means the number of domestic passengers was not included.

Hmmmmm!!! HJAI remains the planet's busiest passenger airport overall without any statistical numbers!?

It's still early on so maybe they are still tallying up the numbers but you can get the picture from the 2013 numbers.

I don't think the difference, if any, will be that drastic for 2014. If 2013 it had 94.4 million passengers I expect 2014 to also be in the thereabouts.

But Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson remains No. 1 in annual passenger traffic. Spokesman Reese McCranie said the airport is projected to top 96 million passengers for 2014, compared with O'Hare, which handled 66.7 million in 2013. That put O'Hare in fifth place globally for passengers.
