A top drug official says that Latin American cocaine traffickers may be using submarines to move the Europe-bound drugs across the Atlantic Ocean.
Alexandre Schmidt, the head of the West African branch of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, said Monday that drug cartels are known to have already used submarines in South American and Caribbean waters.
He said that although no submarines have been seized off the West African coast, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest they are in use here as well. Schmidt described it as the latest trend in the trafficking of the drugs.
West Africa has become a stopover point for drug cartels, who ship the cocaine from South America through Africas porous land and maritime borders before moving the drugs north to Europe.
