The death toll from heavy rains and flooding in Kenya has risen to 42, nearly doubling from earlier reports, the government said in a statement issued late on Sunday.

Authorities say the flooding has severely affected Nairobi, the capital, and several other parts of the country following days of intense rainfall that have overwhelmed drainage systems, submerged homes, and disrupted transport networks.

Government officials said emergency teams have been deployed to assist affected communities, conduct rescue operations, and provide humanitarian aid to families displaced by the floods. Several roads have been rendered impassable, while some residents have been forced to evacuate their homes as water levels continue to rise.

The government has urged residents living in flood-prone areas to move to safer ground as more rain is expected in the coming days. Relief agencies are also working with local authorities to provide temporary shelter, food, and medical assistance to those affected.

Seasonal rains often cause flooding in parts of Kenya, but officials say the current situation has been worsened by rapid urbanisation, poor drainage systems, and settlements in low-lying areas.

Authorities say assessments are ongoing, and the number of casualties and displaced people could increase as rescue teams continue to search affected areas.
