The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has appointed Col Deo Akiiki as Uganda’s new military attaché and defence advisor in Washington, D.C, replacing Col Peter Sonko Buwungo.

Col Akiiki brings a solid mix of operational and administrative experience to the role. Since February last year, he has served as Military Assistant to Gen Muhoozi, and prior to that, he was Deputy Defence Public Information Officer at the Ministry of Defence.

His appointment follows the recent visit of a retired U.S. General Michael Flynn to Kampala, less than three weeks ago. Flynn, who briefly served as National Security Advisor to former President Donald Trump in 2017, has a 36-year career in U.S. national security, including a tenure as Director of the Defence Intelligence Agency. During his Kampala visit, he met with President Yoweri Museveni and Gen Muhoozi and addressed senior military officers.

For Col Akiiki, the challenge will be to navigate the delicate terrain of military-to-military relations while supporting Uganda’s broader foreign policy objectives in the U.S. capital.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, Col Akiiki noted that he is now awaiting the formal diplomatic process between Uganda and the U.S. before officially assuming his post.
