Police in Kagadi District have launched search and rescue operations following a tragic canoe accident on River Nguse that is feared to have left several people missing.
The incident occurred on the night of April 28, 2026, at around 8:30pm in Kyaleni Village, Pachwa Town Council, when a canoe carrying an estimated 35 to 40 passengers capsized.
According to police, one survivor has so far been identified as Byaruhanga Tumuhaise, 27, a resident of Kyaleni. The exact number of passengers on board, however, remains unclear due to the absence of a passenger manifest, complicating efforts to determine how many people may still be missing.
Marine Police responded to the scene shortly after the incident and have since been conducting ongoing search and rescue operations. Authorities say efforts are focused on locating survivors and recovering any bodies, as well as establishing the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
Preliminary assessments suggest that multiple factors may have contributed to the tragedy, including possible overloading of the canoe, night-time travel conditions, and the state of the vessel.
Police have urged relatives of individuals who may have been on board to report to Kagadi Central Police Station to assist with identification and coordination of rescue efforts.
