In San Francisco cannabis delivery services want to send drones laden with drugs to customers' doorsteps
A company in San Francisco has applied for permission to offer deliveries of cannabis by drone.
Trees Delivery wants to use the devices to bring packages of the drug to patients legally allowed to take it for medical conditions.
Orders would be placed using the virtual currency bitcoin and delivered to to patients' homes.
The firm has applied for approval to the Federal Aviation Administration to expand its existing road-based delivery services to include drones.
In California cannabis is legal for people with certain medical conditions, but is not legal for recreational use.
The company's co-founder Marshall Hayner told The Coin Telegraph: "As soon as the FAA passes the appropriate legislation we will have fleets in every state.
"The model that Trees is building is for complete decentralisation and disruption of the cost-heavy, high-overhead current dispensary model."
The drone business model involves customers using a website, app, or text, to order a choice of six cannabis packs, costing between $60 to $150.
A company spokesman told High Times: "We're not sure when we'll be launching yet. We are based in San Francisco and the legal situation here is not clear yet."
In November another delivery company Eaze, known as the "Uber" for medical cannabis, said it was also looking into the using drones in San Francisco.
Eaze founder Keith McCarty said: "Some of our patients are developing drones and they've hit us up."
