The Ministry of Health has successfully tested the use of drones to transport medical supplies and patient samples from Kalangala District to laboratories in Kampala, a move expected to significantly reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment.

Kalangala's island geography has long posed challenges to the transportation of medical samples, with health workers often relying on boats and road transport to deliver specimens to specialised laboratories on the mainland. These logistical hurdles have frequently led to delays in obtaining test results, affecting timely patient care.

According to Ms Prossy Mbabazi, who oversees the drone project at the Ministry of Health, the technology is designed to shorten the time required to move samples from island health facilities to referral laboratories. Faster transportation is expected to improve the efficiency of disease diagnosis and enable quicker medical interventions.

The drone initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Health to leverage technology in strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. By reducing transit times, health officials believe the system could enhance surveillance for infectious diseases, improve emergency response, and ensure that patients receive critical treatment without unnecessary delays.

Health experts say the innovation could be a game changer for island communities where access to specialised medical services remains limited. If scaled up, the project may provide a model for improving healthcare logistics in other remote districts across Uganda.
